In 2018 the global plastic waste management market was US$ 31.7 Bn and will be US$ 41.1 Bn in 2026 with a CAGR of 4.2% from 2019-2026. Plastic waste management is a major concern for the government of developed and developing countries. Constant increase is plastic waste is creating an adverse effect on the environment which has led to the need for proper plastic waste management.

Market Dynamics

Plastic waste generation on global level is increasing every year; according to World Economic Forum the plastic waste generation on global level is 300 million tons each year. High government initiatives in order to develop required infrastructure for waste management is major factor expected to drive the growth of the global market. Government of developed and developing countries is spending high for development of proper plastic waste management infrastructure. Implementation of various projects related to establishment of waste management unit’s by the government is supporting the growth of plastic waste management market.

Plastic is widely used as packaging of various products by end use industries as it tends to be better packaging solution this is resulting high waste generation. According to United Nations Environment Programme report, the world produces 400 million ton single-use plastic (SUP) waste annually i.e. 47% of the total plastic waste. Initiatives by the major players in order to use recyclable plastic in order to control the waste are expected to support the growth of target market to a certain extent.

Increasing initiatives by the major players for adoption of recyclable plastic in order to reduce plastic waste and high investment in waste management facilities is expected to support the growth of target market. Major manufactures of food and beverage products are inclining towards adoption of sustainable packaging solution. Coca-Cola, a beverage manufacturing company operating on global level pledged to adopt 100% recyclable packaging by 2025. In addition, Dow Company took an initiative to finance waste management in order to reduce the global plastic leakage by 45%.

However, factors such as high capital investment and unavailability of required infrastructure for recycling the plastic, coupled with lack of expertise for recycling plastic waste are hampering the growth of the global market.

Factor such as high investment by the public and private players for development of present infrastructure, coupled with increasing collaborative work between the government and private players are expected to create new revenue opportunities over the forecast period. In 2018 government body of India United Nations Development Programme initiated a project in collaboration Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Private Limited (HCCBPL) and Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) in order to establish a waste management system that reduces impact of plastic on environment. The project is currently operational in 20 cities and 22 material recovery centers were built for sustainable waste management practices
