Phytase (myo-inositol hexakisphosphate phosphohydrolase) is every type of phosphatase enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of phytic acid. It is an enzyme which breaks down phytate and enhances calcium (Ca), zinc (Zn), sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg) and amino acid availability and digestibility in broilers and pigs. Phytases fall into two main categories:
- Fungal phytases, from Aspergillus or Peniophera species
- Bacterial phytases, from Escherichia coli
By type, powder and granular type collectively accounted for more than 60% share of the global market. These two types are also projected to be the fastest growing segment over the next six years. Liquid is another widely used type. It is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.8% over the next six years in terms of revenue. Huvepharma has developed a new form for enzyme application in the feed mill: water soluble enzymes which are distorted into fluid enzymes for PPLA (Post Pellet Liquid Application), on site at the feed mill. The NSP enzyme Hostazym X and the phytases Hostazym P and OptiPhos are both available as water soluble powders (WSP). Production takes place by a unique method, as the enzymes have to be extremely concentrated and instantly water soluble in icy water. Large product availability at competitive prices and increasing demand in areas where product can be obtained in liquid form easily will open new avenues for liquid animal feed phytase market growth.
