The global dialysis market is expected to grow at a CAGR of around 5.7% from 2019 to 2026 and expected to reach the market value of around US$ 124.2 Bn by 2026.
Dialysis is a treatment that performs some tasks which are done by a healthy kidney. This is needed to keep the body in balance when the kidneys fail. Dialysis helps in removing waste, salt, and extra water and keeps a safe level of certain chemicals in the blood including potassium, sodium, and bicarbonate. Additionally, it helps in controlling blood pressure. It can be done in hospitals, a dialysis unit or at home, which is mutually decided by the doctor and the patient as per the medical condition and individual comfort. Moreover, there are two types of dialysis including hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Hemodialysis is a common type of dialysis where an artificial kidney is used to remove waste and extra fluid from the blood. During the procedure, a tube is attached through a needle in the arm to pass the blood into the artificial kidney and passed back into the arm through another tube. In addition, peritoneal dialysis filters blood inside the body with the help of inside lining of abdomen i.e. peritoneum instead of an external device. A plastic tube called catheter is inserted into the abdomen on a permanent basis. The process normally takes around 30 to 40 minutes and needs to be repeated around 4 times a day. It can be done overnight with the help of a machine while the patient is sleeping.
Market Dynamics
The rising number of end-stage renal diseases (ESRD) patients across the globe is primarily driving the market growth. Also, the rising number of patients suffering from chronic kidney diseases is accelerating market value. Increasing the incidence of diabetic kidney disease due to the increasing number of diabetes patients is supporting market growth. The shortage of kidney donors and ongoing R&D investments in developed as well as developing economies is further contributing to the market value.
The growing aging population, rising support from various governments and technological advancements are likely to create potential demand over the forecast period. On the flip side, complications associated with the treatment are likely to limit market growth in the near future,
Hemodialysis dominated the dialysis market in the year 2018
In terms of type, hemodialysis segment accounted for the large market share and the segment is also expected to grow at the same pace over the forecast period. The hemodialysis offers better clearance and requires lesser time for treatment as compared to peritoneal dialysis is a major factor driving the segment growth. Moreover, the treatment is done three times a week and each time it lasts about 4 hours, which is sufficient for normal kidney functioning.
